L543 - Syntactic Analysis

Introduction to generative syntax designed for graduate students. After discussing the goals of theoretical linguistics and introducing a particular model of grammar, we will examine linguistic facts in English and other languages and their explanation offered in the literature. Emphasis will be placed upon argumentation and logical thinking rather than memorization of the facts or "rules." The major areas of inquiry are: thematic interpretation, Case marking, phrase structures, anaphoric relations, movement and empty categories.
