We are researching automatic language testing for English. In particular, we are studying how both native speakers and non-native speakers of English respond to questions about images. This means we need to use a research task to collect responses from native speakers and non-native speakers. Our research task is what is known as a picture description task (PDT). Each item of the task contains an image and asks the participant to write one complete sentence describing that image. (Actually, for native speakers, we ask for two different sentences that describe the image.) An example is below.
